Why “Top 10 agencies” lists do not help
Search for the best marketing agency in Palestine and you will find pages ranking agencies in order. Read one carefully and two things stand out: it was usually written outside Palestine, and the ranking rests on nothing you can verify. Many such pages are produced in bulk — the same text for every city and country, with the names swapped.
So do not choose by ranking. Choose by questions. Here they are.
First: ownership questions — the most dangerous
- Is the ad account in my name? If it belongs to the agency, you are building history and custom audiences you do not own, and you lose all of it the day the relationship ends.
- Who owns the domain and hosting? Ask for both in your name from day one. A domain registered to the agency is leverage over you later.
- Do I receive source design files? A logo delivered only as an image means returning to them for every edit.
- And what remains mine if this ends tomorrow? The truest question in the whole call. The answer measures intent, not ability.
Second: financial clarity
- Is ad spend separate from your fees? It must be. Merging hides how much actually reaches the advertising.
- Do you take a percentage of spend? If yes, know they have an interest in raising your spend, not lowering your cost.
- What raises the invoice later? Ask for in-scope and out-of-scope in writing. “Unlimited revisions” always ends in a dispute.
Third: measurement
- What number will we judge by in three months? If the answer is “more reach and engagement”, you are buying noise. The number that matters is a customer, a conversation, or an order.
- How will you know a lead came from the ad? A convincing answer names tools, events and verified tracking. A vague one means the report will be an impression.
- What will you do if the campaign does not work? A serious agency answers with a diagnostic plan. An unserious one assures you it will work.
Fourth: two questions about honesty
- Show us work that failed and what you learned. Whoever never failed never worked much. Saying it plainly is the truest sign of experience.
- Do you guarantee first place on Google? The only correct answer is no. Whoever guarantees it guarantees something they do not own — Google itself does not sell it.
Signals worth noticing
Be wary of: a proposal arriving the same day with no questions asked (how did they price what they do not know?), numbers with no source or period, and pressure to sign today for a discount ending tomorrow. The agency that asks you more than it talks about itself in the first call is usually the more capable one.
In short
Do not choose by a position in a list or by follower counts. Choose by answers: who owns what, how the money is counted, which number we will judge by, and what happens if it does not work. Four lines of questioning reveal more than any designed proposal.
